wp88d84d60.jpg  I was recently asked by my Dad to compare my family’s home school experience to some recreational activity. Images begin to flash through my mind. Walks. I like walks. Quiet strolls through the meadow on our family property. Flowers, the stream, wildlife if I’m lucky. Nope. Not a chance. Our home school has not been a stroll. It is filled with joy, but seldom quiet.

Ok, next. A trip to the zoo? That’s more like it. Life at our house has often been described as a zoo. We just recently visited the one in Knoxville. Giraffes, monkeys, bears, snakes. A hodgepodge of colors, flavors, sounds, movement. Closer, but still not. Our role in visiting the zoo is primarily passive. Everything is behind Plexiglas. We can’t pet the animals. There’s no danger. Now, if we could crawl over that glass and ride the zebras, that would be a different story.

My mind wanders back to the outdoors. God’s creation. Near and dear to me since early childhood. Relaxing, yet exhilarating. Fun, but dangerous. That’s it! Rock climbing. My family and I are clutching a crack in a rock face, somewhere between heaven and earth. Our climb is heavenward, but it’s dangerous. Or kayaking! We’ve gone over a couple waterfalls in our day. Mountain biking. Rolling down a steep, rocky surface at what seems like 100 mph, feeling at one moment that I just might be in control and recognizing at the next that I rely completely on the grace of God for survival. Mountain climbing. Cliff jumping. Caving. In short, an adventure.

An adventure. But only if you are properly equipped! And not just equipped physically. Surviving the adventure requires that you be equally equipped in mind and heart. That’s where we come in. We’ll outfit you with the gear you need to physically get up that mountain or rock wall called the Christian home school experience. We’ll provide the support, companionship, and counsel to equip your mind. And we’ll point you to the Master Outfitter who alone can equip your heart.

Welcome to the Homeschool Hangout. Rugged Gear for the Homeschool Adventure.

We are a family-owned and operated business. Our six children are all homeschooled and we love it. Homeschooling  is a great family-building adventure and so is running a family business. We have been serving homeschoolers for over ten years and we are here to serve you, too. Regardless if you are just getting started or if you are a seasoned homeschooler, we would love to get to know you and to help you the best we can.

We select the products that we carry carefully. It’s a matter of conscience and responsibility before God for us to take this very seriously. We are not in this business primarily to make money, even though that is important to keep the doors open. We firmly believe that God has given us this opportunity to serve you for a greater purpose and that is to help you bring your children up in the truth and to gain knowledge and understanding that is a sure foundation for life. If we don’t believe in a book or curriculum, we won’t sell it.

Books are a great way to educate ourselves and our children. You can learn almost anything from a book, but it has to be a good book and it has to be truthful.

Our books and curricula (new and used) cover Kindergarten through 12th grade. However, we offer also a large selection of good reading books for young and old, all kinds of parent-help books as well Christian books that teach us the sure foundation of our Christian faith from a reformed perspective.

Education in the home should be enjoyable and productive. Besides the core subjects of Math, Science, Language Arts, and History, we seek to build godly character in our children by setting before them a godly example that they can imitate. Therefore, we as parents read good books, study, discuss, and learn with one another and in front of our children. Peggy and I are always studying something together and it is inspiring for our children. We have no TV, no game-boys etc. But we all have a computer for work  and for studying and, yes, to communicate. But the bookshelves in our house are the biggest thing. Nobody is ever bored with a good book in his hand. Come see us.
