English classes to be offered in the fall of 2011:

Sandy Delenick is a veteran high school English teacher of 33 years with a Master's
degree. After teaching in public schools in two different states, as well as in Georgia at
Roswell High School and Oglethorpe University, Sandy began teaching home educated
students in her home just after her daughter was born in 1994 and for the last 10 years at
Living Science Home Studies.  As a home school mom herself, Sandy understands the
needs of home educated students and their parents on a personal as well as a professional
level. She partners with parents and offers her expertise in analytical writing and
literature discussion through a biblical worldview. Her goal is to prepare students for the
SAT writing component and to insure the necessary writing skills and higher level
thinking needed for success in college. Many parents testify that Sandy's teaching has
well prepared their students for the next level after high school.  Her life verse is from
I Thessalonians 5: 16-18, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all
circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
Testimonial from a home school mom:
"We have known Sandy for many years & she has taught my children for the last 5
years. Her experience & ability will blow you away and your child will be more than
prepared for college after taking classes with Sandy. Her previous students' success &
grades prove this! She expects students to work hard & you get your money's worth."
Sandy will be offering the following Literature/Writing courses once a week at
Homeschool Hangout in Alpharetta:
Excursions in Literature BJU # 103051 (8th Grade) Thursdays 10:45-12:15
This course is a basic study of literature through all genres within the BJU anthology.
Students will read, discuss, and be tested on everything covered in class. Because it is an
introduction to writing and literature analysis, many levels of evaluation will be
employed in all areas of learning styles: auditory, visual, and verbal. The students will
learn the structure of the 5-paragraph paper, note-taking skills, and they will be taught
basic upper level thinking skills in dissecting key parts of literature. In addition, they will
be expected to read and report on four novels of their choice from a list provided for their
particular class.
Fundamentals of Literature BJU # 247197 (9th Grade)  Wednesdays  12:30-2:00 (this class will meet at Sandy's home)
This course will review basic writing skills of the 5-paragraph paper, and students will
complete a major literary research paper based on a poem. They will complete three
literary analyses of novels chosen from a list provided for their particular level. In
addition to literature from the anthology which includes short stories, poems, and  a play,
they will do an in depth study of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and George Eliot's  Silas
Marner. At this level, they will start to  master the 5-paragraph paper structure. If time,
the SAT writing component will be offered and practice will begin.
Elements  of Literature BJU # 222158 (10th Grade)  Wednesdays 9:00-10:30
This course is considered a World Literature class and most of the literature from the
anthology will be read and discussed in  class which includes an in depth study of
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  Four novel analyses will be expected from a provided
list. In addition, we will be reading and discussing Dickens' Great Expectations,  which
will include a project and a composition. The SAT writing component will be
offered/reviewed and intense practice will be provided.
American Literature BJU # 225045 (11th Grade) Tuesdays 12:30-2:00
This course is a very rigorous one that assumes knowledge of the 5-paragraph
structure of a composition. Some SAT instruction will be reviewed, but at this level,
most students should be prepared to take the test some time this year. There will be a
major literary research paper completed based on a novel.  It is an expanded version of
the 9th grade paper so it serves as a very necessary review of that process before going on
to the college level. The literature text,  which presents the works chronologically, is very
extensive so there will be major time needed for reading and for test/composition
preparation. Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is the only outside text as well as three
novels for evaluation from the list provided.
British Literature BJU # 195834  (12th Grade) Wednesdays  10:45-12:15
This course will be treated as a college preparatory class; therefore,  a seminar
atmosphere will be maintained. Students will be expected to discuss assigned literature
selections in depth and tests will be essay in nature. In  addition to major works in the
text including Shakespeare's Macbeth, the class also will study Dickens' A Tale of Two
Cities. It is assumed that students will have complete knowledge of composition form,
but personal editing will be available when asked!  Three to four book  reports will be
assigned at the discretion of the teacher.
Tuition for each class will be $650.
If you are interested in placing your student in a class, please contact Sandy ASAP by
phone or by email. Classes are already filling up and will be closed at 15 students.
There will be a parent/student meeting and social time at Sandy's house August 20 at
1:00. At that time, she will cover all the curriculum details with the schedule for the year
and rules regarding the classes, which begin on August 30th.
